Miniature Optical Fiber Aligner
The fiber can be aligned in 2D space (the 3rd dimension being the fiber length). The long positioning capability of the fiber aligner (+150µm to -150 µm in both axis) makes it very suitable for remote control applications. The fiber aligner uses zero power in its lock-in configuration, making it ideal for low power applications. It can also be realigned to another point in the 2D plane to compensate for any drifts in optical modules. Once locked in place, the fiber aligner has no drift due to the power off locking mechanism (play movie). The fiber aligner can also be used as a slow switch or a variable optical attenuator (VOA). The small size of the chip (2mm2) enables it to be mounted at the end of a fiber connector. It can be controlled externally without ever opening the photonic module it is attached to.
